Welcome to a new era of assistive technology on Word Wings.co.uk We are proud to present 'I Can Speak Without You', an innovative app to be developed by Ortho-Graphix and funded by Innovate UK. Spearheaded by Emma Hartnell-Baker, an Innovate UK Award winner, this app will be a game-changer for children who may be non-speaking, but definitely have lots to say! Let's help them grow their 'word wings'! 2Communicating My Way"
 

'I Can Speak Without You' is to be more than just an app; a breakthrough in communication for non-speaking children who have yet to master reading and writing, with a focus on Growing Word Wings.
With this app, children can convey their thoughts by thinking in speech sounds, using intuitive IPA aligned 'phoneme characters' (speech sound monsters) to translate these thoughts to form words and sentences: speech sound mapping. This revolutionary method allows their thoughts to be transcribed into written text, providing a powerful voice for their inner words.
 

The app will be designed to be educational and empowering. As children interact with the unique phoneme characters, which Emma Hartnell-Baker has creatively termed 'speech sound monsters', they simultaneously develop orthographic awareness and learn the fundamentals of written English ie the 'universal spelling code'. These characters serve as visual guides, similar to how adults use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for learning new pronunciations.

The 'I Can Speak Without You' app will be tailored for adaptability and inclusivity. ICSWY allows for the editing of displayed text, enabling collaborative communication with educators, caregivers, or peers. This feature will not only enhance interaction but also encourage users to gradually take control of their communication, boosting their confidence and independence. Utilising phonemic awareness with a super charged 'Speech Sound Brain' is key to this process, and helps children navigate the opaque orthography that creates confusion for so many, regardless of intelligence of communication, speech and language skills.
